Canada has over 60 Prostate Cancer Support Groups that meet once a month. This Richmond group in British Columbia is founded in 2013 by volunteers and focused on providing help to Chinese-speaking men, but everyone is welcome. We speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin, meet on the second Thursday of every month from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at the Seniors Centre of Minoru Centre for Active Living (7191 Granville Avenue, Richmond, BC V6Y 1N9 Multipurpose Room 1 (1033)). Join us for the professional presentation and talk to other men and family members who have been dealing with prostate cancer for weeks, months or even years.

No registration is required and all ages are welcome. Please swipe your Facility Pass ($36/year for seniors 55+ or spouses) or pay a $5 drop-in fee at the front desk when arriving for each session.

If you want to chat one on one with a survivor, you may drop in our walking club. The Richmond Blue Walkers walk 5-10 km on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am-11 am, along the beautiful river dykes and parks in Richmond (Walk in the Richmond Shopping Centre during the rainy days or cold seasons). Click here for the schedule or contact Daniel Leung at 604-836-6423 for the locations and meeting places.

Focus group meeting on advanced prostate cancer 關於晚期前列腺癌 焦點小組會議

Astellas Pharma is working to organize a focus group meeting on advanced prostate cancer, which will hear from caregivers and men living with the disease. We are hoping you may be willing to ask your membership if they are interested in applying to participate.

This focus group will be held on November 16 in Vancouver. Those who are interested will be contacted for a brief screening discussion. Participants who are chosen will be reimbursed for mileage and parking/taxis, and will receive an honorarium of $125 for their time. If they elect not to receive this, a donation in this amount will be made to PCC or PCFBC on their behalf. There will be one session for caregivers, and one for men living with prostate cancer. We expect that each session will take approximately 2 hours.

The objectives of the focus group are to better understand the following:

·         The patient and caregiver’s experience following a diagnosis of prostate cancer
o   Their experience at each stage
o   The medical professionals with whom they have spoken/dealt
·         Their most trusted and valuable sources of information and support
o   How did they access this information?
o   Challenges/barriers they have encountered to identifying and accessing those resources
o   How individuals overcame or managed these challenges
·         The discussion with respect to treatment choice
o   Who ultimately decided on the treatment(s)?
o   What was the patient and caregiver’s role in these decisions?
·         Their suggestions for improvements to the type, quality and delivery of information/support
No personal information will be divulged or shared with Astellas; the process is strictly confidential.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 416-425-9143, extension 208, or my colleague Evelyn Yallen at extension 202.

Thanks,

James Thayer
