Newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients in the Vancouver area, as well as their partners are welcome to attend a special evening session "Introduction to Prostate Cancer & Primary Treatment Options" held by the Prostate Cancer Supportive Care (PCSC) Program at the Vancouver Prostate Centre.
These sessions are held twice a month on a Wednesday evening (545pm) in the Gordon and Leslie Diamond Health Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital. The sessions run about 2 to 2. 5 hours and include presentations on the basic biology of prostate cancer and locally available treatment options.
The presenters include:
1) a long term survivor of prostate cancer, who has personal experience with the most common treatments,
2) a urologist, who
3) a radiation oncologist, who speaks about radiation options. In addition, the two MDs meet each patient and their partner to review with them their pathology reports.
These sessions are specifically for patients who have not yet had any treatment for their cancer and are meant to be educational; i.e., not a replacement for individual consults with specialists.
The dates of the next sessions are Wednesday July 22nd, Wednesday August 12th and Wednesday August 26th.
This session is part of the Prostate Cancer Supportive Care (PCSC) Program initiated here in Vancouver in January 2013 which has been supported by grants from the Specialist Services Committee and Prostate Cancer Foundation BC.
